GM. This is Dumb Money, the only financial newsletter with a 100% loss rate.
The chip selloff finally got personal. Semiconductors had their worst week since July 2025. The VIX woke up from a four-month nap. And one guy bought a fictional cryptocurrency from a video game trailer.
Three stories stood out. All of them involve someone who was very confident at the wrong time.
Here's what we've got today:
🏆 SOXL on margin during the worst chip week in 15 months. Down $91,800.
📉 A fictional cryptocurrency from a video game. Bought with real money.
⚡ Shorted volatility. Volatility woke up. $30,200 gone.
🍪 The best cope from today's comment sections.

This Cybercab you see in this image is taking me to Elon Musk’s new project…
Which he called “the most epic AI project in history.”
This is so big that I believe it will open a brand-new “generational wealth window…”
And whenever Elon opens one of those windows, people get rich.
LOSS OF THE DAY 🏆
Every day we crown one person who made the worst financial decision on the internet.
Today's winner didn't just buy the dip. He bought the dip on a triple-leveraged ETF. On margin.
Here's the setup. The VanEck Semiconductor ETF dropped 10.5% last week. Worst weekly decline since July 2025.
Most people saw that and thought: stay away.
Our guy saw that and thought: opportunity.
He put $148,000 into SOXL on 2x margin. Total position: $296,000. Effectively 6x leverage on chip stocks.
A 10.5% drop in semiconductors meant a 31% drop in SOXL. His $148,000 in equity became $56,200 by Friday.
He panic-sold at the close. Realized loss: $91,800.

TOTAL RETURN -$91,800.00 ▼ $296,000.00 (-31.01%) 1W 1D 1W 1M 3M ALL

"I am cooked." Put $148K into SOXL on margin thinking the chip dip was the buying opportunity of a lifetime. The dip kept dipping. Sold everything at close on Friday. Down $91,800. Top comment: "Brother, you leveraged the leverage. That's not investing. That's a dare."
|
| Quick math on leveraged ETFs: A 3x leveraged ETF doesn't give you 3x the weekly return. It gives you 3x the daily return, rebalanced every night. On volatile weeks, the math gets worse than 3x. It's called volatility decay. Adding margin on top of a leveraged ETF is running leverage on leverage. That is never the move. |
His post had one sentence. Three words. And 4,100 upvotes from people who recognized the exact feeling.

TODAY'S CASUALTIES 💀
Not everybody can be Loss of the Day. But these two gave it a real shot.
Let's run through the tape.
Casualty #1: The GTA Coin Buyer
The new GTA 6 launch trailer dropped on Thursday. It featured a fictional cryptocurrency called Dacity Coin plastered on the side of a plane.
Within the hour, a real Solana memecoin called $DACITY surged 2,900%. From a $104,000 market cap to $3.18 million. In sixty minutes.
Our guy saw it trending on crypto Twitter. He converted $38,400 in SOL and bought the absolute peak.
The coin dropped 61% from his entry. His $38,400 became $14,976.
Here's the thing. The coin was created five days earlier by degens who found the name in leaked GTA 6 footage. He wasn't early. He wasn't even late. He was last.

POSITION VALUE -$23,424.00 ▼ $38,400.00 (-61.00%) 2D 1H 4H 1D 1W ALL

"I thought this was the next DOGE. It was a prop from a video game." Saw $DACITY trending after the GTA 6 trailer. Converted all my SOL. Bought the literal top. The coin was a joke inside a satirical game about financial crime and I bought it with real money. Top comment: "The game is literally making fun of people like you. You are the NPC."

GTA 6 is a game about crime. Dacity Coin is a joke inside that game. He bought it with his retirement stack.

Casualty #2: The "Volatility Is Dead" Guy
Some people trade stocks. Some people trade options. And then there are the people who trade volatility itself.
Our guy shorted 2,270 shares of UVXY at $18.50 on Monday. Total short position: $42,000.
His thesis: the selloff was overblown. Volatility would come back down. Free money.
One problem: volatility did not come back down.
The VIX spiked above 22 for the first time in four months. UVXY surged 72% in five days.
He was margin called on Thursday. Forced to cover at $31.82. Total loss: $30,200.

SHORT P&L -$30,200.00 ▼ MARGIN CALL - FORCED COVER 1D 1W 1M 3M ALL

| Quick explainer on shorting volatility: When you short UVXY, you are betting that the market will stay calm. If the VIX spikes, UVXY goes up, and your short position loses money with no cap on how much. People call it "picking up pennies in front of a steamroller." The steamroller arrived on Thursday. |
He posted the screenshot with the caption: "volatility is dead, I said."
Volatility was not dead. Volatility was sleeping. And he poked it with a $42,000 stick.

BITE-SIZED COPIUM FOR THE ROAD 🍪
The best part of any loss thread isn't the screenshot. It's the comments section.
Here are today's greatest hits.
| • | "SOXL will bounce. I'm not selling." It already bounced. Off your portfolio balance. Into the void. - u/still_in_soxl |
| • | "The GTA coin was a legitimate play. Rockstar basically endorsed it." Rockstar put it in a game about crime. That is the opposite of an endorsement. - u/gta_degenerate |
| • | "I've been shorting VIX for three years and this is the first time it went wrong." The first time it goes wrong is the only time that matters. - u/vix_was_wrong |
| • | "At least I didn't use a HELOC this time." The bar is underground and you still barely cleared it. - u/buy_the_fear_bro |
Translation: the copium reserves are fully stocked. The self-awareness shelves remain bare.
See you tomorrow. New losses, fresh copium, same dosage.
