GM. This is Dumb Money, the only financial newsletter with a 100% loss rate.
Today's theme: people who thought earnings season was their friend. It was not their friend. It has never been their friend.
Three stories stood out. One involves a guy who bought a "safe" stock on margin right before it stopped being safe.
Here's what we've got today:
🏆 A dividend aristocrat on margin. Then PepsiCo reported earnings.
📉 A Swiss franc safe-haven trade that became the opposite of safe.
⚡ A Solana memecoin pump from a guy with 412K followers. The coin lasted longer than the thesis.
🍪 The best cope from today's comment sections.

Take a look at this…
A radical "light-speed" device is turning AI as we know it into "Accelerated AI".
It's smaller than a fingertip. It's made of glass. And it could make AI up to 100 times faster and up to 100 times more energy efficient.
Jensen Huang, Nvidia's CEO, says this device is shattering the limitations of AI and without it, AI can't scale.
Google Ventures says it's the future of AI compute.
And Sequoia Capital calls it a "holy grail".
Yet most Americans have never heard of it…
Wall Street insider Jason Bodner – the same man who called Nvidia at $4.50 – believes this device could launch a whole new wave of AI winners.
And to prove it, he's giving away his #1 stock involved with it – for free.
LOSS OF THE DAY 🏆
Every day we crown one person who made the worst financial decision on the internet.
Today's winner thought he found a cheat code. Buy the dip on a dividend aristocrat. What could go wrong.
Here's the setup. PepsiCo had been sliding for weeks. Down to $126.72. Near its 12-month low. JPMorgan had just downgraded it to Hold.
Most people read that downgrade and think: stay away. Our guy read it and thought: discounted blue chip.
He went all in. $294,000 of PEP on 2x margin. His thesis was two sentences: "54-year dividend streak. They sell Doritos."
One problem: PepsiCo was about to report Q3 earnings.
The report dropped October 8 before market open. Frito-Lay North America volumes came in weak. Revenue guidance got trimmed. PEP dropped 50% by lunch.
Margin call at 11:14 AM. Force-liquidated by noon. Total loss: $147,200.

TOTAL RETURN -$147,200.00 ▼ $147,200.00 (-50.07%) All Time 1D 1W 1M 3M ALL
|
"Bought the JPMorgan downgrade dip on margin. AMA about what capitulation feels like." $294K of PEP on 2x margin six days after the JPM downgrade. Thesis: 54-year dividend growth streak, Frito-Lay is America. Earnings came in weak. Stock gapped down 50%. Margin called at 11:14 AM, force-liquidated by noon. Top comment: "When JPMorgan downgrades a stock and you buy it on margin the same week, you are not a contrarian. You are a customer."
|
| Quick explainer on margin for non-brokerage people: Buying on 2x margin means you borrow half the money from your broker. If the stock drops enough, the broker force-sells your shares to protect itself. You eat the full loss. The broker eats nothing. That's how margin works. The house always gets paid. |
Here's the thing. He didn't buy some garbage token. He didn't use 100x leverage. He bought PepsiCo. On margin. Before earnings. After a downgrade.
Every single piece of information told him to wait. He bought anyway.
Reading a downgrade and buying harder is not conviction. It's denial with a brokerage account.

TODAY'S CASUALTIES 💀
Not everybody can be Loss of the Day. But these two gave it a real shot.
Let's run through the tape.
Casualty #1: The Safe-Haven Forex Guy
There's a trade that looks genius on paper. Short the Swiss franc when yields are rising and the dollar is strong.
Here's what u/macro_thesis_chad did. He went 30x long USD/CHF. Thesis: dollar dominance, Treasury yields at 5.27%, risk-on environment.
Then the market got spooked. A geopolitical escalation on Wednesday sent capital flooding into safe-haven currencies. The Swiss franc ripped higher. USD/CHF dropped 4.1% in two hours.
His position was liquidated in 47 minutes. $38,700, gone.

POSITION P&L -$38,700.00 ▼ LIQUIDATED - 47 MIN HELD 1H 4H 1D 1W ALL
|
"macro thesis was correct, timing was off" Went 30x long USD/CHF with $38,700 margin. Dollar index was strong. Yields at 5.27%. Then one geopolitical headline hit and CHF went full safe-haven mode. Liquidated in 47 minutes. Top comment: "Your thesis was a weather forecast. The weather changed."
|
| Quick math on 30x forex leverage: At 30x, a 3.3% move against your position wipes out 100% of your margin. The Swiss franc moved 4.1% in two hours. He was out of margin before the move was half over. |
He posted the screenshot with the caption: "macro thesis was correct, timing was off."
Translation: the trade was wrong.
Casualty #2: The Influencer Coin Buyer
A crypto influencer with 412,000 followers posted a thread about a new Solana token called $FEASTMODE.
The thread had charts. It had arrows. It had the phrase "early alpha." It did not have the phrase "I'm getting paid to post this."
u/alpha_hunter_sol saw the thread. He bought $41,300 worth of $FEASTMODE at 2:14 PM.
The influencer sold his entire bag at 2:31 PM. Seventeen minutes after the thread went live.
The coin dropped 88% in the next 90 minutes. His $41,300 turned into $4,956.

TOKEN VALUE -$36,344.00 ▼ $41,300.00 (-88.0%) All Time 1H 4H 1D 1W ALL
|
Here's the thing. The influencer's wallet was public. The buy happened 90 seconds before the thread went live. That's not alpha. That's a press release.
He is now mass-replying to the influencer's new threads with his P&L screenshot. The influencer has him muted.

BITE-SIZED COPIUM FOR THE ROAD 🍪
The best part of any loss thread isn't the screenshot. It's the comments section.
Here are today's greatest hits.
| • | "PepsiCo is a forever hold. This is just noise." It's noise that cost you $147,200. That's a very expensive noise. - u/divvy_dreamer_88 |
| • | "My macro thesis was correct. The execution was off." Your execution was the entire trade. There is no thesis without execution. - u/macro_thesis_chad |
| • | "I didn't lose money. The influencer stole it." He didn't steal it. You sent it to him voluntarily through a smart contract at 2:14 PM. - u/alpha_hunter_sol |
| • | "Frito-Lay will recover. I'm averaging down." On margin? With what margin? The broker already closed the position. - u/chip_dip_buyer |
Translation: copium reserves remain at all-time highs. Accountability remains at all-time lows.
See you tomorrow. New losses, fresh copium, same dosage.
