GM. This is Dumb Money, the only financial newsletter with a 100% loss rate.
Yesterday was a double feature. ASML cut guidance before the open. Then CPI came in hot at 3.8%. The market did what the market does when both things happen at once.
It panicked.
Three stories stood out. All of them are painful. One of them involves the phrase "generational buying opportunity."
Here's what we've got today:
🏆 $138K on ASML weekly calls. Guidance cut. Options worth $0.04.
📉 80x long SUI, forty minutes before a hot CPI print. Liquidated in 19 minutes.
⚡ UNH on 2x margin at 52-week lows. The lows got lower.
📊 The data on today's carnage. It is worse than you think.

America’s answer to universal basic income
Saudi Arabia figured it out.
They pay their citizens $3,600 a month per family. Just for existing. Funded entirely by oil.
Meanwhile, politicians in America are arguing about Twitter, while you get nothing from the $300 billion we generate from oil and gas every year.
But there is a way to collect.
It's called the Patriot Income Plan, or P.I.P. for short.
It's not a government program. It's not a stimulus check. It's not tied to an election or a budget vote.
It's direct ownership in 14 entities that control America's energy infrastructure — pipelines, terminals, processing plants — and pay 10% a year to everyone who holds units.
Put in $10,000 = get $1,000 back.
Put in $50,000 = get $5,000 back.
Put in $100,000 = get $10,000 back.
42 payouts a year. Deposited automatically.
This is universal basic income for people who don't want to wait around for the government to figure it out.
P.I.P. is on pace to pay out $53 billion this year — a record. The next distribution drops in days.
LOSS OF THE DAY 🏆
Every day we crown one person who made the worst financial decision on the internet.
Today's winner bet $138,000 that ASML would keep beating earnings. ASML had other plans.
Here's the setup. A guy on r/options bought 150 ASML $1,850 weekly call contracts at $9.20 each.
The thesis: ASML had beaten earnings three quarters in a row. AI demand was insatiable. The stock was up 74% on the year.
ASML reported Q3 before the open on October 14. Revenue hit €12.6 billion. That beat estimates. But the company cut its 2027 guidance, citing tighter China export controls and softening demand outside of AI.
The stock opened down 7.2%. His $1,850 calls were $85 out of the money at the bell.
They went from $9.20 to $0.04. He lost $137,400 in one earnings print.
He posted the trade two days earlier with the caption "free money." Seventeen people commented "this is the way." All seventeen are also underwater.

"Free money. ASML beats every quarter. This is literally free money." Bought 150 weekly $1,850 calls at $9.20 each. AI demand is a freight train. Three consecutive earnings beats. The guidance raise cycle doesn't stop here. Update: the guidance raise cycle stopped here. They cut 2027 outlook on China export controls. Calls are worth four cents. Top comment: "The free money was free for a reason."
|
| Quick math on weekly options: A weekly call expires in days. If the stock doesn't reach your strike price by Friday, the option goes to zero. There is no second chance. There is no "it'll come back." Friday is Friday. |
The best part: ASML's revenue actually beat estimates. The stock still dropped 7.2% because guidance is what the market prices next, and the guidance said less.
Beating earnings and losing money anyway. That's a special kind of pain.

TODAY'S CASUALTIES 💀
Not everybody can be Loss of the Day. But these two gave it a real shot.
Let's run through the tape.
Casualty #1: The CPI Day Leverage Enjoyer
September CPI dropped at 8:30 AM on October 14. Consensus was 3.7%. It came in at 3.8%.
One problem: u/sui_season_2026 had opened an 80x long on SUI at $1.92 about forty minutes before the print.
His thesis was "Uptober." That was it. That was the whole thesis.
CPI printed hot. Crypto dumped. SUI dropped 6.4% in twenty minutes.
At 80x leverage, a 1.25% move liquidates you. He needed a miracle. He got a margin call.
$52,400. Gone in 19 minutes.

"CPI stands for Can't Predict Inflation" Opened 80x long on SUI 40 min before CPI. Thesis: Uptober. CPI came in hot. Liquidated in 19 min flat. My portfolio went from $52K to a screenshot for this subreddit. Top comment: "Uptober is real. It's just the losses that go up."

He's not wrong about the acronym. But he's also not solvent.

Casualty #2: The "Generational Buying Opportunity" Guy
This one stings because the thesis wasn't even crazy.
UNH was down 18% from its July highs. Medical cost concerns had beaten the stock up for months. It looked cheap.
So u/value_trap_victim bought $82,400 worth of UNH on 2x margin. His post title: "UNH at 52-week lows is a generational buying opportunity."
One problem: UNH reported Q3 on October 13. Medical cost ratio came in at 90.4%, worse than the 90.0% analysts expected. The company trimmed full-year guidance by $0.40.
The stock dropped 9.3% the next morning. His margin call hit at the open.
Loss: $41,200. His broker didn't ask. They just sold.
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||
TOTAL RETURN -$41,200.00 ▼ MARGIN CALL - FORCE SOLD 1D 1W 1M 3M ALL | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
| Quick math on margin for non-options people: Buying on 2x margin means your broker lends you half the purchase price. If the stock drops enough, they force-sell your shares to protect themselves. They don't ask. They don't wait. They sell. |
His follow-up post: "the thesis hasn't changed." Brother, the thesis literally changed. The company changed it. In the earnings call. On a recorded line.

The correlation between saying "free money" and losing all of it remains statistically perfect.
We've tracked 43 instances of someone calling a trade "free money" in the past six months. Average return: negative 94%. The phrase is the most reliable sell signal on the internet.
See you tomorrow. The numbers will be different. The behavior won't be.
