GM. This is Dumb Money, rounding up the internet's biggest Ls so you don't make them yourself.
Today's theme: good news that destroyed everyone who bet on it.
The vaccine worked. The stock dropped 25%.
The calls expired worthless.
Three traders learned that being right about the fundamentals doesn't make you right about the trade. $223K in combined losses says so.
Here's what we've got today:
🏆 A cancer vaccine that worked. A stock that dropped 25%. $161K in calls, gone.
📉 Shorted oil during an active military conflict. $23,700 lesson.
⚡ A DeFi protocol voted to drain its own treasury. In minutes.
🤣 Dumb memes from the trenches.

The $3 Trillion Crisis That Almost NOBODY Is Talking About
According to Wall Street legend Dr. Martin D. Weiss, there’s a $3 trillion financial crisis happening right now.
And almost nobody but him is warning people.
In fact, according to WSJ, this $3 trillion market “is under growing strain, despite the industry's upbeat tone.”
Weiss says the biggest danger is NOT just another stock market crash.
The biggest danger is NOT only a major bank failure.
Rather, it’s a chain reaction of crashes and failures across the globe.
LOSS OF THE DAY 🏆
Every day we crown one person who made the worst financial decision on the internet.
Today's winner had the right thesis. He just had the wrong trade. Those sound like the same thing. They are not.
Here's the setup. Moderna's melanoma vaccine was heading into its Phase 3 data readout on October 22. The trial was with Merck. Early signals looked strong.
u/vaccine_tendies saw a layup. He bought 120 MRNA weekly $250 calls at $13.50 each. Total position: $162,000.
One problem: the data leaked early. Oncology Central published the results before the official presentation.
And here's the part that hurts. The data was good. The vaccine reduced melanoma recurrence. Doctors praised it.
The stock dropped 25% anyway.
Analysts called it a sell-the-news reaction. Expectations had gotten so high that even positive results weren't positive enough. His 120 calls went from $13.50 to $0.08 in about forty minutes.

"Vaccine works. Portfolio doesn't." Loaded $162K into MRNA weeklies ahead of the melanoma data. The data was positive. The stock fell 25%. My calls went from $13.50 to eight cents. Top comment: "Being right about the medicine and wrong about the market is the most expensive kind of right."
|
| What "sell the news" means for non-options people: When a stock runs up on anticipation of good news, the good news itself often triggers a selloff. Traders who bought the rumor take profits the moment the event arrives. The result: the news is great, the stock drops, and anyone holding short-dated calls gets destroyed. |
The thesis was correct. The vaccine works. But the market had already priced in a miracle, and when it got one, it sold.
That's the part worth understanding. Correctness and profitability are two completely different things.

TODAY'S CASUALTIES 💀
Not everybody can be Loss of the Day. But these two gave it a real shot.
Let's run through the tape.
Casualty #1: The Oil Contrarian
There's a certain kind of trader who sees oil spiking on geopolitical chaos and thinks: "This is overdone. Time to short."
On October 22, Iran claimed attacks on seven vessels in the Persian Gulf. Brent crude ripped past $111.
u/fade_the_spike shorted 3 Brent crude futures contracts at $106.20. His thesis: the spike was exaggerated and oil would pull back within days.
It did not pull back. Brent hit $114 the next day. Then $116.72 by Friday.
He shorted a commodity during an active military conflict in the world's most important oil chokepoint.
His broker issued a margin call Friday morning. Forced cover at $114.10. Loss per barrel: $7.90. Times 3,000 barrels: $23,700.

He posted: "I was right about the fundamentals. Just wrong about the timing."
You were not wrong about the timing. You were wrong about shorting oil while warships are getting hit. Those are different things.
Casualty #2: The X100 Yield Farmer
This one happened fast. October 24, 2026. Three Ethereum transactions. A few minutes.
X100 was a DeFi protocol on Ethereum with a three-seat governance Senate. To pass a proposal, you needed two seats.
An attacker flash-loaned a pile of USDT, bought X tokens, used them to buy two of the three seats, then passed a proposal that made the treasury sell 400,000 tokens for ~36 USDT.
Not $36,000. Not $36 million. Thirty-six dollars.
Then they drained the liquidity pool. Total extracted: $4.85 million. The token crashed 96%.

"I read the docs. There was a governance diagram. I thought that meant it was safe." Deposited $38,700 into X100's yield vault. The protocol had a three-seat Senate for governance. An attacker flash-loaned USDT, bought enough tokens to take two seats, passed a proposal to drain the treasury, and took $4.85M across three transactions. My balance went from $38,700 to $312 overnight. Top comment: "A governance diagram is not an audit. It is a drawing. With arrows."
|
| Quick primer on flash loans: A flash loan lets you borrow millions in crypto with zero collateral, as long as you pay it back in the same transaction. Attackers use them to temporarily gain massive voting power in governance systems, pass malicious proposals, and drain treasuries-all in a single block. |
The protocol had a governance diagram in its docs. It did not have a flash-loan guard on its voting mechanism.
One is a drawing. The other is security. They are not the same thing.

DUMB MEMES 🤣
Every newsletter needs a meme section. Ours just hits different when you're reading it from a portfolio that was right about everything except the trade.

See you tomorrow. Same losses. Different people. Exact same mistakes.
