GM. This is Dumb Money, rounding up the internet's biggest Ls so you don't make them yourself.
Today's issue features a man who lost five figures on a leveraged Bitcoin trade, then immediately rolled what was left into a 20x Tesla long. Two days before earnings.
Three stories. Three different ways to set money on fire. All of them preventable.
Here's what we've got today:
🏆 A 40x Bitcoin long into a 20x Tesla long. Same week. Same result.
📉 RBLX calls before earnings. Missed estimates. Dropped 17%.
⚡ 50x long GBP/JPY into a BOJ dovish hold. Pair barely moved. Still liquidated.
🍪 The best cope from today's comment sections.

They Proved It Worked in '76. Then Buried It.
In 1976, Chevron tapped an energy source powerful enough to run a city. No fuel costs. No supply chain. Then they killed it. Unocal and Texaco did the same.
Now one company has spent sixty years perfecting what Big Oil refused to touch. Google locked in a 15-year contract. Bill Gates wrote a $100 million check.
On November 17th, Washington hands it an edge no other energy source gets.
LOSS OF THE DAY 🏆
Every day we crown one person who made the worst financial decision on the internet.
Today's winner didn't just lose once. He lost twice. In the same week. On the same platform.
Here's the setup. A trader on Hyperliquid opened a 40x leveraged long on Bitcoin at $81,200. His margin was $91,400. The notional position: $3.6 million.
Bitcoin dropped 2.5% over two days. At 40x leverage, that's not a dip. That's a deletion.
He closed the position manually to avoid full liquidation. The damage: $91,400.
Here's where it gets special. Instead of walking away, he took his remaining $59,230 and opened a 20x leveraged long on a synthetic Tesla perpetual. Two days before Tesla's Q3 earnings report.
He went 20x long on Tesla. Before earnings. With money he'd just lost on Bitcoin.
Tesla reported on October 21. Beat on EPS. Stock initially rose. Then fell 3.3% after hours on margin compression.
At 20x leverage, a 3.3% move is a 66% loss. His $59,230 became $20,138 overnight.
Total damage across both trades: $130,492 in six days. His post-trade comment was four words.

"Lost $91K on BTC perps. Used what was left to go 20x Tesla before earnings. AMA." Opened 40x BTC long at $81,200. Closed at $79,170 to avoid liq. Put remaining funds into 20x synthetic TSLA perp two days before Q3 report. TSLA beat EPS, then dropped 3.3% AH. At 20x that's a 66% hit. Top comment: "Conviction is not a strategy. It's what people say when they don't have one."
|
| Quick math on 40x leverage: At 40x, your entire margin is wiped by a 2.5% move against you. Bitcoin moves 2.5% on an average Tuesday. Now imagine rolling the remains into a 20x earnings play, where a 5% move deletes you entirely, on a stock that moved 3.3% on a beat. The math was never on his side. |
"Conviction is my edge." That was his four-word post-trade review.
It was not his edge. His edge was a margin slider he pushed to the right twice in one week.

TODAY'S CASUALTIES 💀
Not everybody can be Loss of the Day. But these two gave it a real shot.
Let's run through the tape.
Casualty #1: The "They'll Beat" Guy
Roblox reported Q3 earnings on October 29. Revenue rose 16% year over year to $1.6 billion. Missed estimates.
The stock dropped 17% the next morning.
Here's the thing. Daily active users fell 9% to 138 million. GTA VI is looming over holiday guidance. Q4 outlook was soft.
u/rblx_to_the_moon bought 60 RBLX $55 weekly calls at $4.80 each. Total cost: $28,800.
His thesis was three words: "They'll beat." They didn't.
The calls went to $0.03. He lost $28,620 on a company that missed revenue expectations.

"RBLX missed estimates and I lost 99%. I don't know what I expected." Bought 60 RBLX $55 weekly calls the afternoon before earnings. Revenue missed. DAUs fell too. GTA VI spooked the guidance. Calls opened at $0.03 and never recovered. Top comment: "Earnings is not a revenue number. It's a story. The story changed."
|
| Why "they'll beat" is not an options thesis: Options pricing reflects expectations about the future, not just last quarter's numbers. Roblox missed on revenue, showed declining users, and gave soft guidance. The stock reacted to all of it at once. Weekly calls amplify the damage because there's zero time for recovery. |
A stock that misses estimates and delivers soft guidance doesn't need a reason to drop 17%. Roblox gave the market several reasons at once. His calls did not survive any of them.
Casualty #2: The BOJ Whisperer
This one's quick because the trade was quick. Forty minutes quick.
u/yen_carry_king went 50x long GBP/JPY at 211.40 on October 28. The thesis: the Bank of Japan would hold rates and stay dovish. The yen would weaken.
The BOJ did hold rates on October 29. And the tone was dovish.
One problem: GBP/JPY barely moved. The dovish hold was already priced in. The pair chopped sideways through the announcement - but at 50x leverage, even a brief spread blowout during a central bank window is catastrophic.
At 50x leverage on forex, you don't need a directional move. You need a spread widening. He got one. He was margin-called in 40 minutes.

|
He bet $31,500 that a central bank would do exactly what it did. It held. It was dovish. The pair barely moved. And he still lost, because at 50x leverage, being right about the decision doesn't save you from the spread.

BITE-SIZED COPIUM FOR THE ROAD 🍪
The best part of any loss thread isn't the screenshot. It's the comments section.
Here are today's greatest hits.
| • | "Conviction is my edge." It is not. Your edge was a margin slider set to 40x. - on the BTC/TSLA double disaster |
| • | "Revenue was up 16% though." And still missed estimates. Dropped 17%. Revenue growth is not a beat. - on the RBLX earnings wipeout |
| • | "The BOJ held. I was literally right." You were right. The pair barely moved. You still got margin-called at 50x. Being right and being solvent are different things. - on the GBP/JPY liquidation |
| • | "I'll make it back on the next earnings play." No you won't. But we'll be here when you don't. - u/lessons_are_optional |
Translation: the copium supply remains fully stocked. The self-awareness shelves remain bare.
See you tomorrow. New losses, fresh copium, same dosage.
